Nicholas Langley returns to Third Kind for his 2019 LP ‘Final Wave’ following previous 2019 releases on soundtrack label Spun Out Of Control and Cologne’s Strategic Tape Reserve...

“...the last project for me to finish out of quite a few recent albums. It’s taken many years of recording in the background while I’ve been working on other projects. This is the one where I say, this is MY sound. It feels like it’s my final word on things for a little while.”

The 14 tracks span a wide range of directions and inspirations such as idm, electro, mechanical acoustics, footwork, synth funk and dark ambient, all bearing Langley’s particularly colourful approach and made predominantly using a combination of hardware, keyboards and smartphone apps.

The moods, styles and approaches often switch up between tracks, from minimalist minuets to “dense, detail-rich behemoths”. On ‘Think!’ for instance, the technology is limited to a hole-punch music box and a biscuit tin, whilst tracks like ‘Glock1’ and ‘Cat’s Eyes’ layer a multitude of carefully processed analogue gizmos, apps, toy keyboards, family voice recordings and tuned percussion...

Langley produced ‘Final Wave’ during his tenure on Resonance Extra world dance music radio show ‘Le Monde Discotheque’ whose jingles also make an album appearance here. As a result perhaps, the inspirations behind the album are global, but of particular influence was pioneering electronic dance music from South Africa, Japan, Chicago and Detroit.
